AST SpaceMobile is a satellite designer and manufacturer based in Texas, United States. They are building a SpaceMobile satellite constellation, in short a space-based cellular broadband network compatible with existing (and unmodified) smartphones to connect to its satellites.
Filling the mobile coverage gaps has been the goal of many communications companies, AST is not alone, nor the first, to aim for this, but their USP is to connect ordinary mobile phones to a space-based cellular broadband satellite network. The AST SpaceMobile network is focussing on connectivity at 4G/5G speeds all over the world; land, on the highs sea and in the air. Think of uninterrupted coverage across the globe .
In January 2024 they secured $155m of funding from Vodafone, AT&T, and Google, to deploy its direct-to-cell constellation. This will undoubtedly raise the share price of AST to a new level.
